Narcissus

This project reimagines the myth of Narcissus, giving the river a voice and presence of its own. In the original story, the river exists only to reflect Narcissus’s beauty—a passive object, nothing more. Here, it becomes a character, alive and aware, with its own story to tell and its own beauty to be seen.

The video carries a North African twist, with the tale narrated in Arabic by the voice of a mother-artist. Her words bring layers of memory and culture, connecting the story to a place where water is life, history, and a witness to countless untold stories.

There is a strong sense of nostalgia throughout, reflected in the use of analog textures. The grainy, fragile quality of a cassette camera becomes a way of holding onto fleeting moments, much like the beauty often overshadowed in nature.

We are mirrors for one another. This piece explores how much of what is seen in the world is a projection of what lies within. The river pushes back against this, asserting itself as more than a reflection, more than an extension of anyone’s gaze. It stands as a reminder of what is often forgotten: the beauty and depth of what exists beyond the self, unaltered and whole.
